WEST WARWICK — The first quarter of fiscal year 2010 is closing in the black, Finance Director Malcolm Moore told the town council at their Tuesday night meeting.

“All departments so far look like they’re coming in under budget,” he said. “The revenues are mostly coming in where we want them to — about the same as last year.”

As a result there will be a small surplus in the first quarter, Moore said.

The state will start the year in January with a hole of roughly $250 million in the current fiscal year budget, Sen. Lou Raptakis (District 33) said; he hopes the state can find the savings by cuts to their own budget, but he doubts it is possible.
