Town petitions court about payment

WEST WARWICK—The dispute over the $1.16 million settlement of the 2008 Caruolo Case continues.

Pushing the matter into the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the Town of West Warwick has filed a petition for issuance of writ of certiorari in response to the Rhode Island Board of Regent’s ruling that the town and school could not agree to avoid maintenance of effort.

West Warwick is the fourth most fiscally stressed town in the state.

Scoring 3.75 on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being most stressed, West Warwick received one of the highest stress levels in the state, according to the report released by the Municipal Fiscal Stress Task Force last month.

WW unions asked to help make ends meet

WEST WARWICK — Unions will be asked to help reduce next year’s budget.

Raises for police and fire union members went into effect on Jan. 1, under contracts negotiated in July 2008. Now, because of a vastly different fiscal landscape, they will be asked to make some concessions. The municipal union contract has been expired since 2008.
